Everything I Need to Know...

Everything I need to know about life I learned from Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass
Back to Full Blog

LOL! Honestly, I'm not positive what I was doing this morning. Well, I do know what I was doing... I write stories and post them at another site. I write best to classical music, or more distinctly, music without words. I decided I'd grown weary of the selection in my library so went to Wal-mart on-line to purchase some downloadable music.

I started first with soundtracks... downloaded a fantastic 6 minute piece from Mission Impossible by the Israel National Orchestra (at least I think that is who done it :-p)

Anyway for some reason I decided to see if I could find anything by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. When I was a kid, I mean like little... well, the record album came out in 1965 so basically I was 4 years old... my mom had The Whipped Cream and other Delights album. I remember wearing my white with blue polka dotted rain coat, and standing on the ottoman and dancing to this music. The cover was ... wow! Mind boggling! I mean there was this woman covered in whipped cream, with the most saucy look on her face. It was the closest to porn I'd ever come.  I mean, her boob was partially exposed!

As I was growing up, I often listened to this album.  I wasn't even certain what I was listening to.  For example, I JUST realized this morning that Love Potion # 9 is on that album.

My mom exposed us to alot of classical and jazz.  I love listening to that type of music, because I can close my eyes and imagine so much stuff!  As I started listening to the downloaded music, I got this BIG ASS grin on my face.  It had been so long since I'd listened.  Doncha love when that happens?

This rings true, I have been there, HUGE GRIN! My experience was w/Santana Oia Coma Va? and 5th Dimension-Up, Up and away! Two of my MOMS favs. As well as Clerance Clearwater Revival, and good ole Johnny Cash. I think I am a little younger, I was one in "65" but I totally relate to what you are saying. I get tears and my throat wells up when I play some of the music I grew up with like "American Pie" and "Jerimiah Was a BullFrog", My kids think I am such a sap,and dork sometimes! LOL. Online music has made it so easy to punch in a few words and find those long lost treasures! I love my ITunes! I have framed many of my favorite albums and they hang in the hall. (restoration hardware, carries the album frames)

I remember "SRO" being played on the brand new Philips stereophonic amplifier constantly around the house when I was a little president. "Whipped Cream" I rediscovered in the college film school sound department, dying for someone to bring in footage of a strip tease so I could score it with "Love Potion No. 9." Great music, technically beautiful recordings. Don't forget "Tijuana Taxi." Bubble Wrap Regards, The President.

God, Pres! I was just thinking last night how Herb's rendition of Love Potion sounds like Strip Tease! Great minds think alike, aye? Maybe I could be president some day.

Remember all those songs--great music-still love the songs of the 50's--60's--70's---80's---when I hear them forget about my age.

I love your blog. It's a good place to learn new things (Karpman Triangls) and to remember (Herb Alpert and the sounds of his Tijuana Brass). I hope you bring some of your stories to us too.

Get outta here, Spyder!!! Were we raised by the same parents??? Dad had all Herb Alpert's 33 1/3rds.... and blew out many a speaker and phonograph needle from Allied with cranking out those "Brass" jams on the "Hi-fi"! Yeah, I remember the album cover being quite titillating for this wee lass, too, as well as feeling strange tingly stirrings that Herb had it going on when I saw his pic on other almbums, such as The Lonely Bull. He rarely sang, himself, but "This Guy's In Love With You" gave me the biggest crush on him!! What a great memory!! And is Herb still alive now?? And is he single?? hehe ;D

You know, I had to go find Herb Alpert's online bio... it would seem he is 70 years old now (there goes THAT fantasy, darn it!). But what a guy, what wonderful music, and what a trip down memory lane! Thanks, Spyder! :D
